EDU 792 Reflection
The most important thing I learned in this course was in regards to the topic of flipped learning in general. I have always heard the phrases "flipped learning" and "flipped classroom" tossed around. However, I was never fully aware of what those terms really meant or how to do it. It ended up being much more simple than I ever thought.
I cannot count the amount of times that I have felt like I didn't have enough time teaching a specific concept. There is so much pressure to get through the entire curriculum in the year. It's difficult to move on knowing some students haven't fully grasped a concept. Flipped learning gives teachers an amazing opportunity to get that time back. When students watch the videos prior to coming class, there is much more time for students to get individual attention from their teacher. Not only that, but it leaves time for students to collaborate in class. Lecture time has always been my least favorite part of class. Flipped learning essentially takes that lecture time completely out of the classroom. I would love to use flipped learning in my classroom.
If I were to continue my learning from this course, I would love to learn techniques to use inside of the classroom in regards to flipped learning. This course gave me many ideas on how to create engaging videos for my students. The next step in flipped learning is how the teacher then uses their classroom time. Of course, this would vary between content areas. As a math teacher, I feel like there would be so much possibility for my students to work together. The amount of time for collaboration in the classroom would double my using flipped learning. I would also like to know how to overcome any challenges that come with flipped learning.
One surprising thing I learned in this class was about stop gap animation videos. I never would have thought this would be something a teacher would use in their classroom. If I'm being honest, I felt like stop gap animations were extremely old school and unnecessary in today's age. However, I ended up having a lot of fun creating my stop gap animation video on adding doubles using game cards. It definitely taught me that I should think outside the box more often.
