Introduction

Hello!

I am Alyssa Fuller. I am in my third year teaching math. My first year teaching, I taught middle school math and science at a catholic grade school that I attended myself! It was an amazing experience to work at a small school that meant so much to me growing up. Unfortunately, the school was one of the Archdiocese of Chicago schools that closed down after my first year teaching. I am so thankful to have experienced being a student as well as a teacher in the place that helped shape who I am. After the school closed, I went on to teach math at Morton East where I am still located now. It is my second year teaching there.

My Twitter account is only used for work. In high school and college I absolutely loved using twitter on a personal account, but I have since deleted my personal Twitter. The reason I deleted Twitter was because every time I opened the app, I felt the need to scroll through my entire feed until I had seen every post that I missed since the last time I logged in. I realized I was spending way too much time on the app and didn't need it anymore. Although my account now is used for work, my cover photo is a picture of my two nieces because they are a huge part of who I am. I guess that shows a little personal side of me even though it is a work account.

Next is my Instagram. My photo is of my siblings and me. I have my name under "Alyssa Lucille" because Lucille is my middle name. I changed my name on social media once I became a teacher. I did this because many teacher friends that I know do the same. This leads to a funny story because even though I did that, my students are tech savvy enough to still find me. Last year, a student made a bet that she could find my Instagram in under 5 minutes. Surprising myself and some of my other students, she did. I have a story reel containing books I read and love. I read often and a lot of my friends ask for book recommendations. I find it easier to just tell them to look there. I have no bio on Instagram. I used to fill that space with quotes or lyrics that I loved but I found it to be too much pressure trying to find the perfect line to put in my bio. That piece of social media doesn't matter to me as much anymore.

Lastly is my Facebook page. Like my Instagram, I made my name "Alyssa Lucille" on there. This January, I got married. As my profile picture and cover photo needed some updating, I decided to choose pictures from that day. My profile picture is myself and Shane. My cover photo is my two flower girls, my nieces. These are two of my favorite pictures from that day. My About Info is empty. It used to contain where I lived, where I worked, where I attended school, etc. However, one day I decided to delete those things. I thought anyone who matters to me enough already knows that and it didn't need to be on there.

  1. Hi Alyssa!
Nice to be working with you again! I enjoyed the ESL courses a lot! Hope you learned from them too!I can't wait to work with our ELLs.
I like your blog's style- very minimal and simple. Super cute!
So glad to have you at Morton East! I hope you love the family as much as I do :)
I am the same way with Twitter as you- I have a "work" account but it is very inactive. I never developed a personal Twitter, I just can't seem to get into Tweeting. I hope some of our peers can show us how effective Twitter is as a social media platform within the classroom and education field. I want to dip my toes into it.. I am sure it can be very useful. By the way, having your nieces as your cover is simple adorable, I love that!
Isn't so funny how students can still find us even with name changes.. I swore that my FB is not easy to find and yet within 2 seconds of mentioning it a student found me and added me (high school students are way into social media and adding their teachers!).
Congratulations on your wedding! You look beautiful in your photo! I hope it was a special day for you despite COVID weddings still a thing.. my wedding is in September. Hoping for the best for our big day!
Nice to work with you again! Can't wait to work together to learn about social media in education!

  2. Hi Alyssa! Your story about teaching at a school that you previously attended warmed my heart! I can only imagine how it felt to go full circle. Such a bummer that the school closed.

I agree with you about Twitter. I used to be super into tweeting as well years ago. I also deleted mine since I would spend WAY too much time scrolling! I do think having a professional twitter would be a different experience, though! I am interested to hear more about how that is going for you! And finally, congratulations on getting married! Your photo looks beautiful! I am glad you were able to get married, even with some restrictions due to COVID. :)

  3. Great to meet you, Alyssa. Thanks for the insightful introduction to who you are. I appreciated the narrative about why you chose the images and bios that you did (or did not). Like you, I was in a school that was closed (mine was CPS). It's quite an interesting experience, to say the least. Looking forward to learning with you!

  4. Hey Alyssa,

What an experience it must have been to be able to work at the elementary school that you also attended. Sorry it closed down, but great perspective on the opportunity that it was to have been there as both a student and teacher. I too used my twitter account heavily mostly in high school and eased out of it in college. I was also that person that scrolled until I was all caught up on all I missed. I resonated with you changing your name on some of the social media accounts because I too did the same so that some people wouldn’t find me as easily as well. I think I was one of those students that tried/found my teachers on social media once that became more of a thing as well. I also liked your last point about getting rid of some of the “about me” details and bios, I too don’t have mine as updated/full, but don’t really care either.

It’s nice to meet you, looking forward to seeing more of your reflections throughout the class.
