EDU 792 Reflection

The most important thing I learned in this course was in regards to the topic of flipped learning in general. I have always heard the phrases "flipped learning" and "flipped classroom" tossed around. However, I was never fully aware of what those terms really meant or how to do it. It ended up being much more simple than I ever thought. I cannot count the amount of times that I have felt like I didn't have enough time teaching a specific concept. There is so much pressure to get through the entire curriculum in the year. It's difficult to move on knowing some students haven't fully grasped a concept. Flipped learning gives teachers an amazing opportunity to get that time back. When students watch the videos prior to coming class, there is much more time for students to get individual attention from their teacher. Not only that, but it leaves time for students to collaborate in class. Lecture time has always been my least favorite part of class. Flipped l...

Social Media Article Reflection

What Gen Z is Watching Online Image Source      How will marketing change based off of what Gen Z is watching? This article appealed to me because I always find it interesting to see what my students are watching. Sometimes we end up being interested in the same TV shows and movies. I like that we can still relate to one another even though recently people try to create a huge divide between generations. This article referenced the amount of YouTube Gen Z is watching and I was astonished. I remember only watching YouTube videos that were viral. I never just scrolled through YouTube. The only time I would leave it on was for music purposes. This reminded me of my own nieces. My nieces are only 5 and 6 but they are obsessed with YouTube. One of my nieces refuses to watch movies and I believe it is probably because movies are too long for her to endure after being so used to YouTube videos. It makes me sad because I want them to watch all of the Disney classics with m...

Media Literacy

Image
Media literacy is a skill in critical thinking. It is important to be literate in media because of the world we are living in. In the competitive career fields our students will be entering, understanding and being literate in social media is essential. It is a skill that citizens will be expected to know. Rheingold's social media literacies include attention, participation, collaboration, network awareness, and critical consumption. It is important for students to know more than just how to create on social media. All 5 literacies are important for students to know. They all interwind with one another. I believe the most essential that they still need to learn today are attention and critical consumption. Image Source      I believe learning more about attention would be so beneficial for people of all ages. I am shocked at the end of the week when my phone tells me how much screen time I have averaged in a day. I have only now just thought about th...

Legality and Internet Safety

Image
COPPA and CIPA are federal laws in place to keep children safe. As a high school teacher, I will be honest and say that I have never felt the need to be the one providing my students this information. I have always felt that this is something my students should have learned and understood by the time they reach my class. However, I now believe that students at all ages would benefit from learning internet safety . Looking back at my own experiences, I could have definitely used more information regarding internet safety throughout all of my school years. Image Source      It is Danah Boyd's belief that COPPA teaches kids to lie. I do think there is some truth to that. At the age of 11 or 12, I had been using Myspace, AOL Instant Messenger, and YouTube. I knew at the time that there were age requirements but I always just lied on the policy agreement and proceeded to use the platforms. CIPA and COPPA did not stop kids my age from using the social media ...

Digital Tattoos

Image
I have thought about my digital footprint a lot in the past. Because I have had social media platforms since a very young age, I truly have no idea what could come up about me if I were to search.  This week, I decided to do a data dig on myself. I started off with googling a common username I use as well as my full name in quotes. When googling  my username, my Instagram account pops up immediately. When I googled my full name, only 2 links come up. I see a link to a page titled "People Living at" followed by my mom's entire address and a background check website that states my age. I haven't changed my last name yet, but I decided to try to google that name as well. When I do, Google shows me the same link with my mom's address as well as my own house's address. I have known for a few years now that it is this easy to find people's addresses and family members on the internet. However, it shocks me every time I see it. Personal Image      While l...

Acceptable Use Policies

Image
Acceptable Use Policies remind me a lot of Terms of Services. I feel as though both are necessary yet few people actually read them. In high school, I went to one of the first schools in my area that students each had their own laptop. I don't recall if I ever signed an Acceptable Use Policy but I can assure you I never read through it. I knew the basics of what you should not do on the school laptops. The school did their best to block any social media sites and game sites. However, students always found a proxy website to get past that. Once the school realized this, they would block those proxies. However, new proxy websites were made daily so it was something students always found a way to get past. I am sure using proxy websites was against the Acceptable Use Policy but students never received consequences for it. Image Source      Thinking back on my experience makes me wonder how much my students know about our district's Acceptable Use Policy ....

Privacy and Social Media

Image
Exploring the topic of privacy as it relates to social media is something I was a bit scared to do. I know I am not fully informed on the topic even though I use multiple platforms without much thought to it. For the most part, I have believed that since most of my pages are private, my information is also. Image Source      An article that caught my attention was one regarding Facebook quizzes. Although I do not post those any more, I used to post surveys and quizzes on Myspace very often. Looking back, that is a crazy concept as I was only 13 years old at the time. I have also seen an increase in these types of quizzes on my Facebook timeline since quarantine has begun and people have less to do. These quizzes or surveys ask questions for fun that involve your past and personal life. People are freely answering these questions without the thought of what it could do. I would also think most of these questions are not private matters in the first pla...
